ID Theft - Individuals

Many people relate identity theft to just credit card theft. But in fact, identity theft actually involves these five different areas.

  1. DRIVERS LICENSE (DMV)—an identity thief could obtain a drivers license in your name and accumulate traffic violations and warrants for your arrest in your name.
  2. SOCIAL SECURITY number—an identity thief could use your Social Security number for employment purposes and you could get the tax bill plus do many other things in your name.
  3. MEDICAL—an identity thief could use your personal information (medical records & health benefits) to obtain prescriptions or medical services in your name which might reduce your available benefits and alter your medical records.
  4. CHARACTER/CRIMINAL IDENTITY—an identity thief could use your information to commit crimes in your name and escape fines or jail time.
  5. FINANCIAL IDENTITY—an identity thief could use your information to obtain money, goods, or services leaving you with the bill.

This crime, identity theft, is responsible for more than forty-eight percent (48%) of all problems reported and categorized by the Federal Trade Commission in 2006. Identity Theft is intrusive, dangerous, expensive, and extremely frustrating to its victims, both businesses and families. Theft of non-public information from businesses is the largest source for identity thieves.

Odds are at some time you will be a victim of Identity Theft/Fraud or learn you already have been. Many people don’t learn they are already a victim until they go to purchase or sell their house, apply to go to college, apply for a job (and learn they already work for the firm), or are being charged and arrested for a crime (or crimes) they didn't commit.. If you have been victimized once there is a good chance you will be victimized again.

If your purse or wallet was lost, found and returned, I recommend that you act as though it is still lost, and report its loss (including its return) to all card companies, Social Security Administration (if your card was in it), Motor Vehicles, etc. and letting them know that you don't know if your information was compromised (because you don't).

Thieves obtain your information then may sell it locally or worldwide to support themselves, other criminals or organized crime if they don’t use it themselves.  What's your ID IQ?  Take the test.

The real headache associated with Identity Theft is the average cost of 600 Hours it takes you to restore your identity.

It can cost you $1200 and more per incident to clear your name, if you ever do!

That includes qualified licensed investigators and specially qualified identity theft legal services locally and probably in other cities/states. Have a protection product already? What do you have? There are different products and services available. They don’t do the same thing. Some companies have used the names interchangeably which can mislead you to thinking you have a service you actually don't.

ASK what do you have and what does it do for you! We suggest you have an attorney review it and tell you what it does and doesn’t do.  Need an attorney?  Click here.
